TALLEST NATIVE TREES OF THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

AS DETERMINED BY THE EASTERN NATIVE TREE SOCIETY

List created and maintained by Colby B. Rucker, corrected to January 2004

The following trees are the tallest of their species accurately measured in the Great Smoky Mountains national Park.  All are growing in the wild, and of natural origin.  One tree, the Boogerman Pine, has both its current and 1995 heights listed.  Bob Leverett and Will Blozan took the 1995 measurements.  The 1995 height of 207 feet is the highest accurate measurement obtained for any tree in the eastern United States within modern times.  This noble pine is proof that modern eastern trees can, at least on rare occasion, reach 200 feet in height, if left sufficiently long to grow.  Reports of 200-foot tall pines in Michigan and a 200-foot tall swamp chestnut oak in Alabama are not reliable.  The Boogerman Pine stands alone as the only legitimate 200-foot tree in the East and the white pine stands as the only eastern species living today that has been measured to heights of 180 feet or more.  Significant height measurements for eastern trees are listed from time to time in the National Register of Big Trees and in state level counterparts.  However, with the exception of those trees measured by members of the Eastern Native Tree Society, virtually all, if not all, reflect poor measurement methodologies as described in much of the Eastern Native Tree Society literature on how to measure tree heights accurately.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park contains the most extensive old-growth forests in the eastern United States.  The Great Smoky Mountains are noted for their great variety of native trees, and the large size attained by those species.  Exceptionally tall trees reflect the optimum growing conditions – a combination of abundant rainfall, rich soils, and moderate temperatures.  Fortunately, most of the forest within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has escaped the limiting factors common to most of the eastern United States – logging, development, and agricultural activities.  As a consequence, this is the premier site for studies of maximum tree heights.

These trees – outstanding examples of sixty species - have been carefully measured by members of the Eastern Native Tree Society, using direct measurement or laser-based techniques, principally a double-triangulation sine-top/sine-bottom laser/clinometer procedure.  Combinations of these approaches are often used in dense cover and challenging terrain.  Traditional clinometer-baseline and similar-triangle methods have proved notoriously unreliable and are not accepted.  In the interest of brevity, and to facilitate height comparisons, species are grouped according to height, taxonomy and habitat.  Examples from both the Tennessee and North Carolina sides of the park are shown, as well as many state co-champions and extinct champions.  The dates of measurement are included.
