ENTS,
While my mother was in surgery today at the St. Joseph's campus of
Memorial Mission Hospital here in Asheville as I walked down across
the street to measure the Brooklet Oak which is located just off
Brooklet Street behind a big parking garge. Initially I believed it
to be a Red Oak ( Quercus Rubra ) but the leaves & acorns more
resemble the White Oak ( Quercus Alba ). The bark is a bit darker
than most White Oaks though. The tree is taller than the parking
deck and I would guess the tree close to 100 feet in height. It's
girth is a decent 15' 7 1/2 ".

I have attached 3 photos taken, one with mom for scale, last summer.
All three combined are less than 300mb so it should not be too
difficult for dial up users.

I also measured a large nearby maple and three really decent
hawthorns. I will post them tomorrow.
Below is an older post I did on the tree.

I also uploaded a picture of this ragged but magnificent oak to the
file page.

Beth,
Will went by and measured the Brooklet Oak. It is a White Oak as you
identified it and is 79 feet tall.
