ENTS,

On 1/10/08 I measured a few large trees at the public library in
Tionesta. Tionesta is one of the small towns along the banks of the
Allegheny River. Tionesta was the terminus of the "expedition" Anthony,
Ed, and I conducted back in September 2007. The following trees are
located within the grounds of the Sarah Stewart Bovard Memorial Library.
The library actually rests on the grounds of a long since demolished
church and cemetery. Many of the towns first settlers are buried here
that go back to the days of Chief Cornplanter and the Revolutionary War.
Many stones are still visible. I only measured the three largest trees
on site:

Species CBH Height Comments

Sycamore 15.4 125 12x100
White oak 13.3 84.1+
White oak 13.5 84.2

We've now catalogued 27 trees in the 12x100 class along the banks of the
Allegheny River:

Species #12x100's

N. red oak 3
Silver maple 6
Sycamore 18

We've only scratched the surface. Once all is said and done we'll have
many more trees that'll reach this size class for the Allegheny. It
will be interesting to see if the species ratio of 1:2:6 will stand as
we collect more data.

Dale,

Great Stuff. Where are the three 100 x 12 Red Oaks located? In your original post about our trip to Thompson Island http://www.nativetreesociety.org/fieldtrips/penna/ariw2007/ariw2007a.htm You listed two northern red oaks in the size class, but had missed listing a third we measured but you did not GPS. It was the farthest downstream of the series of big red oaks and was the point where we split up on the trip that day. I was not sure if this was your 3rd big NRO or not.

Ed,

I got all three listed on Thompson Island towards the bottom end. There
was another ~13 x ~90 that I have that didn't make it, that I believe
was around the upper 1/3 section of the island.

Here's the 12x100 NRO stats for Thompson:

13.4 x 100.4
13 x 102
13.5 x 102
