ENTS,

On 2/27/08 I gave the Longfellow Pine its once a year "check-up" to
monitor its growth. We've been measuring the Longfellow Pine's growth
since it was first discovered and measured by a host of our Grand Ents
(Robert Leverett, Will Blozan, Bob VanPelt, Jack Soban). It has been
measured and climbed by the best over the years, so we've been keeping
close tabs on this jewel of not only the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,
but currently the tallest known tree north of the Smoky Mountains.

I averaged this day's laser shots to 184.3, 182.9, and 183.7, and
settled on an average of 11.2ft CBH x 183.6ft high. This is a 0.5ft
increase from its last measurement on 9/26/06. It was first measured to
11.1ft CBH x 178.1ft in July of 1997 and has grown 5.5ft in almost 11
years. Here's a quick run down of its height history:

CBH Height Date Increase Method

11.1 178.1 July 1997 avg height

VanPelt, Leverett, Blozan, Soban
11.2 180.9 4/20/02 2.8ft tape drop

11.2 182.1 10/8/04 1.2ft

11.2 182.5 11/19/05 0.4ft

11.2 183.6 4/10/08 0.5ft

Will, Jess, and I measured it before the Ents rendezvous at Cook in
April 2005, but Bob & I re-measured it in October after the growing
season and it had grown to the 11/19/05 measure.

Top looks good and has weathered a few big blows well.

Dale,

Great news! You know this means I now HAVE to measure "Dales Demise" in
Cataloochee. Ironically my last measurement was 183.7 ft on 9/12/2004.

Dale, Will,

My notes show the original measurement of the Longfellow Pine at 179.1 instead of 178.1. I can check with Jack Sobon, who did the measuring.

Bob,

That sounds right. So, that'd be 4.5ft of growth in 11 years, averaging
0.4ft/year.

ENTS,

It is also interesting to note that the Tom's Run Pine, recently
re-measured, also averages 0.4ft of growth/year over a 5 year period:

CBH Height Change Avg growth/year Date of Measure

10.3 161.7 N/A N/A 1/21/03
10.5 163.6 1.9ft 0.4ft 2/28/08

Dale,

FYI- "The Boog" has gained .46 feet annually since I climbed it.
