ENTS:
Recently I had a chance to spend a couple of hours in this old growth
patch in the Monongahela National Forest. Darian Copiz in a previous
post did a good job of describing the area. I did get good
measurements on 6 dominant Red Spruce trees with the biggest one at
107' and 89.2" CBH. The rest measured down to 98' but I only measured
the easier ones since the people I was with really were not interested
in getting intimate with the Rholdodendron. This is my first measuring
foray in Rhododendron and ENTS measuring trees in the Smokies have my
admiration. I intend to go back someday and get a Rucker Index but
there is not much species diversity in the canopy and one may have to
go downslope to get 10 species. For anyone interested this is a very
accessible Old Growth site and only requires a walk of 200 feet from
thje road.

Old growth spruce 200 feet from the road? Awesome!
