Fall Foliage 2008

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both.
Robert Frost (1874–1963). Mountain Interval. 1920.

Fall was beginning to color the East Coast of the United States when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image on October 12, 2008. Orange touches trees in the north and at higher elevations, where temperatures are cooler. Lower elevations are still green. The fall color follows the sweep of the Appalachian Mountains through Pennsylvania, New York, and into New England. (link to text)

A couple of shots from a hike up West Kill Mt on the western end of the Devil's Path, in the West Kill Wilderness Area of the Catskill Park (NY).  These pictures are all from areas Mike Kudish has identified as first growth forest. It wasn't quite peak color yet, but those old sugar maples sure were beautiful...  I went up to a bog on the shoulder of Kaaterskill High Peak the next weekend, and the colors were really popping. - photos  by Ron Gonzales

Eastern Kentucky

Left and Above- A reserve just south of Lexington.  Though not was glorious, they represent color in an oak-dominated forest growing on limestone soils of the Inner Bluegrass.   BTW, this forest, though mature 2nd-growth, is less than 20 miles from the earliest settlements in KY and the second largest city in KY.  Despite this, is has a good number of 300-400 yr old chinkapin oaks - photos by Neil Pederson
