The tree outlived children that climbed its branches and lovers that picnicked under its shade.

Now, all that remains is a stump.

The 125-year-old tree at the corner of the historical Horton House at 375 Riverview Drive on Jekyll Island was arguably the oldest Red Bay tree in the United States.

It had to be eradicated last fall after becoming infected with Laurel Wilt disease, an infection caused by a fungus....

Ed,

I have never heard of Red Bay trees. Like the hemlocks and Am Chestnut
I hope they can be saved.

ENTS,

I was on Edisto Island, SC last October and as far as I could tell every
single red bay was dead. They were not in 2006. Congaree has some sweet
ones-the tallest known I think. Maybe if a temporary fungal treatment works
we could encourage them to be saved.
