Are the Timber Wars in the West Over? Mike Leonard
June 22, 2009

Don,

Here is a brief article on the subject:
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2009/06/22/ground_zero_in_tim
ber_wars_shows_signs_of_peace_boston_globe/

As to be expected the article is rather shallow, but it did mention the
huge scope of the job: 60-80 million acres of our federal lands need
restoration forestry (thinnings, prescribed burning, etc.). It doesn't
say how many acres they are treating every year. Does anyone know that
number?
But they lost me when they mentioned "green certification" so I had to
leave a comment.
Why are many people supporting the FSC monopoly? If we have strong
forestry laws and they are strictly enforced, there is no need for
certification. It was only meant for large industrial forest lands.
