Black Mountain Crest Trail, NC   James Smith

In November (the last time I was free to go hiking), I hit the Black
Mountain Crest Trail from Mount Mitchell and hiked over to Winter Star
and made the return trip by backtracking. Hell of a hike. It had been
some time since I'd been up there, and I was stunned at the recovery of
the Fraser firs! Where I had hiked in full sunlight ten years ago, I was
now walking in shade again. The forest, while uniformly young of course,
looked very healthy.

What's the deal? They haven't had time to be killed by acid rain? Are
the aphids gone? Are they as doomed as their predecessors?
