While visiting the Morris arboretum in Chestnut hill Philadelphia yesterday. We came across an odd hickory called Carolina hickory, Carya Carolinae-Septentrionalis. Anyone know this tree? Looked like a shagbark/shellbark relative.

9.2 cbh
95.9' tall
63x66 spread

I guess it is a state champ, since there isn't one listed!

Also was disappointed to visit the 1993 champion zelkova and katsura, as they were coppiced trees that were measured improperly.

Next on my list is a "myth busters" mission to Winterthur gardens in Delaware to see a state champ tulip poplar reported to be 184' tall.!! Doubt it.
