Don't know if you fellows have seen this website. PATC-sponsored. Has
some excellent historical photos of enormous trees and fantastic groves
that once covered the Alleghenies.

That white oak is a redwood, and has been a past discussion topic on this
list. ... Have you ever seen white oak bark a foot thick?

The photo appears in an excellent book titled "Coast Redwood: A Natural
and Cultural History", along with dozens of other stunning photos. The
caption to the photo reads:

"With its undercut completed, this redwood near Fortuna is ready for a
back cut." The photo credit is given as the Steenfott Collection of the
Humboldt State [California] University Library.
