Forest Service Releases Plan for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Suppression
[North Carolina] Robert J. Jacobs, regional forester for the USDA Forest
Service's Southern Region, recently signed the Decision Notice for the
Suppression of Hemlock
Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Infestations on the Nantahala and Pisgah National
Forests.

The document gives detailed information about the agency's plan for
controlling the pest and minimizing the damage it has done to the eastern and
Carolina hemlock stands within the region. According to the document, the
agency's plan calls for a combination of biocontrol-the releases of predator
beetles to control HWA populations-and chemical treatment for maintaining genetic
reserves.
