Attached is a reworked Excel workbook
designed to fit a parabola to a set of measurements - presumably the
measurements of a curved trunk or limb. The intent is to calculate the lenght of
a trunk or limb as a parabola. The drawing in the Diagram worksheet shows
the basic setup. Three measurements are shown, but up to 10 can be take.
If the two worksheets look intimidating,
remember that all that is required is to enter the raw measurements (distances
and angles) in the Diagram worksheet and then click on the Regression worksheet
to see the results. The red cells have the answers - the arc length and slope
length for comparison purposes from the initial to final point.
If there are questions about either worksheet, I'll
get to the questions in a week or so.
