Dogwood flower showing typical flat  4-petal shape.  Photo by Edward Frank, May 25, 2005.  The "petals" are actually  4 broadly elliptical shaped, white, bracts. The flowers themselves are actually yellow and form a crowded head  in the center of the white bracts.  The combination of bracts and flowers are colloquially called flowers.

Dale Luthringer comments:  Notice how the veins come out of the midrib of the leave and gently flow in an arching pattern that reluctantly reach the edges of the margin of the leaf... classic dogwood veination.
